Continuing last week's theme of finding the beauty in so-called ordinary birds, here's a sampling of the avian friends I found while out and about at the Ballard Locks and the Edmonds waterfront. (And one bonus shot from my own deck.)
Rock pigeons (a.k.a. rock doves, a.k.a. squab, a.k.a. flying rats) are probably the most ordinary of wild birds to us city dwellers and thus likely the most ignored. A pity, because their iridescent feathers are quite striking. And they're kinda cute when they're interacting with their mates.
The Canada goose is... not my favorite bird. They're not quite as ill-tempered as their swan cousins, but I've had some tense encounters with territorial males. Not to mention the whole situation with their droppings. Canada has a very pretty bird, though. Around here we call them "geeks" because my wife and I give things silly names like we're three years old.
Last, but certainly not least, the American crow is a familiar sight at our house. Mostly because we want to build a crow army so we feed them. Difficult birds to take photos of due to such dark feathers. Really, really gorgeous shape to their plumage once you get the lighting right.
